Sandy Rios is the director of governmental affairs for the American Family Association and a conservative radio host on American Family Radio. After seeing the powerful and heart-wrenching speech given by the father of US Army Captain Humayun Khan, who died serving this country, Rios was not moved. In fact, she questioned the loyalty to America of a man whose son sacrificed his very life to protect it.
‘From my perspective, it is the responsibility of Mr. Khan to distinguish himself from Islamists, from the Muslim Brotherhood whose treatise is to destroy us from within. If he is a patriotic, loyal, American-Muslim, then we want to hear that, that’s great, and we grieve with them over the death of their son. But do not disparage Americans or Donald Trump for having concerns about Muslims in our midst.’
Rios is drawing on a common argument by xenophobes to question those of Islamic faith who are frustrated with being stereotyped and condemned for the actions of a tiny fraction of Muslims in this country and across the globe. She mentions nothing about groups like the Free Muslims Coalition, which works to condemn terrorism and create real solutions to end jihadism. Rios also failed to mention the vast numbers of Muslim leaders who have openly condemned terrorism and have worked to prevent it.
How many times has Rios or any other right-wing xenophobe called on anyone who professes to be Christian to condemn Christian terrorism in this country, such as the bombing of abortion clinics or the murder of abortion providers? Why are professed Christians not called upon to condemn violence against Muslims in the United States? How much more of a sacrifice does a Muslim father need to make to prove his family’s loyalty to this country than the death of his own son to protect its freedoms?
Rios continued her disgusting rant against a father who sacrificed everything to see this country protected from terrorism.
‘So I’m sorry, we’ll not be shamed. I’m sorry for the loss of their son and I hope he is a loyal American, but I think a loyal American Muslim would be more like Zuhdi Jasser, who is very clear about where he stands, who was very patriotic and loyal and totally distances himself from Islamism.’
According to Rios, Muslims must renounced their faith to be considered “loyal Americans.” Actions, like teaching your son to love this country so much that he would be willing to die to protect it, just aren’t enough.
